04.11.10. X Factor Featured Poppy Raising Concerns on eBay

Limited edition Poppy Brooches being sold on eBay are raising concern for the Royal British Legion.  The brooches which were created by the charity as an alternative to the traditonal commemorative poppy have come under unprecidented demand since being featured on Saturday’s ITV show X Factor.  The official Buckley Poppy brooches which are gold plated and include Swarovski crystals are being sold for £9.99 as an alternative to the traditional red flower to encourage greater uptake.

Currently the brooch is acheiving values of up to £175 on eBay through sellers acting independently of the charity.  Although, there is no law stating that proceeds should go to charity, the British Legion is asking for sellers to contribute a portion of the retail price to charity.

“We obviously cannot stop people doing it, but we hope everyone who does sell a poppy on an online auction site makes a donation to the Royal British Legion,” a spokeswoman says.
